Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does it work?

Each treatment is individually planned collaboratively with the Psychologist. Therapy is meant to be a four-hands treatment that requires your full commitment. In the weekly sessions you will get to know your mind, learn techniques to regulate your emotions and deal with unhelpful behaviours.

  • How long does it last?

It is impossible to know up front how long you will be in therapy. It depends on your goals and the extension of what is brought. In CBT you can expect anywhere from 6 to 20 sessions, but some people might be in therapy for 1 or 2 years. The ultimate goal is for you to become your own therapist, so this is not an endless treatment.

  • Why an International Psychologist?

Just like you, our Psychologist understands how it feels to move to a different country where your entire life and culture is left behind. You can read more about her in the “About” section of our website to understand her story and see if it resonates with you.

  • Do you work with health insurance?

No. Lume Psychology is a private practice that does not work with health insurance companies in the Netherlands. Thus, the clients are responsible for the payment of treatment. A referral from your GP is not needed and we have minimum wait time.

  • What can I expect from the 20-minutes session?

This is a short session for you to get to know your Psychologist, for her to understand what you are seeking and to be sure that she can help you. It is also important for you to feel if this is a match, because one of the success factors in therapy is the quality of the therapeutic relationship.

  • What is CBT?

Cognitive-behavioural therapy is an evidence-based therapy that treat your cognitions (thoughts, emotions and feelings) and behaviours. This is the current gold standard for treating common mental health problems.
